On November 22, 2024, Gaines Pet Treats LLC announced a voluntary recall for some of their beloved dog treats. These treats have the possibility of a Salmonella contamination, so check to make sure you're not serving the affected products to your dog.
Which Products were Recalled?
The company recalled the "Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips." These are five-ounce bags, and the affected bags have a lot number of 20061124 and an expiration date of 12/11/25. You can find this information marked on the back of the bag.
These chicken chips were sold through online retailers and through small independent pet supply stores in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. The recall occurred after third party testing found the potential for a Salmonella contamination.
No illnesses have been reported related to this recall yet. No other products or lot codes are affected. Gaines Pet Treats is working hard to retrieve all the affected products.
Risks of Salmonella for Pets and People
Salmonella not only affects the pets eating the treats, but it can also pose a risk to humans exposed to it. Pets with Salmonella may experience lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Infected pets not showing symptoms can still pass Salmonella to humans and other animals.
Humans with Salmonella could experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In extreme cases, it could lead to more serious conditions, such as arthritis, endocarditis, arterial infections, muscle pain, and eye irritation.
If anyone in your household, both humans and pets, experience unusual symptoms after coming into contact with these treats, seek medical care right away. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
What to Do with the Recalled Treats
If you have a recalled bag of dog treats, stop serving it to your dog and dispose of it. Clean any surfaces the treats might have touched, such as containers, bowls, and counters. Thoroughly wash your hands after handling the treats.
